Hey stingers!! As we know, St. Patrick’s Day is March 17st. But what is St. Patrick’s Day celebrated for?
St. Patrick’s Day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of christianity in Ireland and, by extension, celebrates the culture and heritage of the Irish in general. St Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17 because celebration on March 17 started in 1631 when the Church established a Feast Day honoring St. Patrick’s Death. He had been Patron Saint of Ireland who had died around the fifth century, 12 centuries before the modern version of the holiday was first observed. Today, people of all backgrounds celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, especially throughout America, Canada, and Australia. But it's also celebrated in Ireland, Japan, Singapore, and Russia.
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated a lot in America because of the huge number of Irish roots here. More than 1 in 10 people in America are Irish. There are 130,000+ people in America that were born in Ireland, and about 35 million people with Irish ancestry live in the U.S. today.
