NYC Marathon 2023
By Desmond Watkins (12-1-23)
The NYC Marathon took place on Sunday, November 5th. Every year, tens of thousands of runners attempt to run this grueling race throughout the city. The main body of runners are the people not competing, but there are 10 ‘elite’ runners who compete for a $100,000 prize. The NYC Marathon is an annual huge citywide event. Many roads are closed, and fans flock to watch it or cheer on those they know running in the race. If you can’t make it in person, many people watch the live televised version.
The race starts at the tip of Staten Island, travels through Brooklyn, goes over the Manhattan Bridge, travels just into the bottom of the Bronx, and finishes by Central Park. The NYC Marathon is the largest marathon in the world, with tens of thousands of people who run each year. It is one of the World Marathon Majors. The race is organized by New York Road Runners (NNYR) and has been run since 1970. The race attracts both amateur and professional runners. Because of the popularity of the race, the participation is chosen mainly by lottery. However, there are other ways to gain entry to the race such as meeting time qualification or donating money. This year, around 50,000 people ran in the 52nd annual marathon.
The main body of runners did very well but let’s focus on the elite competitive runners. The winner of this year's NYC Marathon for the men’s category was Tamirat Tola from Ethiopia with 2 hours and 4 minutes. The Winner of the Women’s category was Hellen Obiri from Kenya with a time of 2 hours and 27 minutes.
This year's marathon was very interesting and many people ran this annual celebration of NYC’s running community.
