Harvest Hop Review
By Desmond Watkins (10-28-23)

Recently, M.S. 442 hosted its first dance of the new school year - The Harvest Hop! For those who don’t know, the Harvest Hop is an annual Halloween themed dance hosted by the school's PTA. Students dress up in costumes with elaborate makeup to eat and dance with their friends. There are contests like the dance contest and the costume contest, and there is a DJ and a Photo Booth.
This year's Harvest Hop was hosted on Thursday, October 26, from 5:00-7:00 PM. Many students showed up in costumes or everyday wear and danced and ate with their friends. After 30 minutes of hanging out and dancing, the first contest started. The first and most popular competition was the dance competition. Students chose a song, danced, and then the student body voted on each of the groups or people with their noise. The first person was Natalie, a former champion from last year who did a dance for the song Kill Bill by SZA, a crowd favorite. Next up, another popular group who danced last year. With Cole hitting a backflip mid dance and Dylan’s “sturdy” skills this group definitely got a lot of cheering.

The next group was a 6th grader using his cane as a baton, who also got a decent amount of cheering, dancing to Nicki Minaj’s “Barbie”. The next act was a girl dressed as Wednesday Addams doing a duet with a girl using her hand as “Thing”. They danced to the classic Wednesday Addams song. Lastly, a sixth grader dressed as the classic Wobbly Man figure danced to the theme song of the show Little Einsteins. Then came the voting. In the end, it came down to Natalie and Dylan and Cole's dance group. After extensive redos, it was eventually decided a tie and both groups won bee bucks and extra out to lunch.
Overall, students had fun at this year's Harvest Hop. I interviewed Newsletter Correspondent Freddie Stark. “I thought it was really good, like I thought it was really fun,” they told me, “I liked all the activities.” Freddie also noted that “What I didn’t really like about this year is that they didn’t let us out into the courtyard,” which many students at the dance were sad about. This year, snacks and candy were ramped up, but most other things were the same. “It was fun but mediocre [and the] same as last year,” said Tatum Tatalie, a 7th grader. Students still had fun, but some 7th and 8th graders felt that the dance was a little repetitive. It was true that it was the same DJ and Photo Booth and similar music and contests but overall it was still fun.
This year's Halloween Dance was great and we should all send a big thank you to the PTA for making it happen. Check out more photos and coverage of the dance on Bee TV.
